On January 13-14, 2025, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, in collaboration with Bethel Candle of Hope for the Vulnerable (BCHV), hosted a transformative two-day Financial Literacy Training for women in Hayin Banki, Kaduna State, Nigeria. With 100 women participants drawn equally from Christian and Muslim backgrounds, the program highlighted the critical role of women in peacebuilding and economic stability.

Held at Bajju Hall, the training fostered interfaith collaboration and unity among participants of diverse religious, ethnic, and family backgrounds. Through group discussions and interactive sessions, women explored how shared financial challenges can serve as a platform for mutual understanding and social cohesion.

The training emphasized key topics such as the relationship between poverty and family tensions, practical strategies for record-keeping in small businesses, characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, and the nuances of accessing business loans. The initiative highlighted the vital role of financial empowerment in strengthening families. Empowered women contribute to household stability by reducing economic dependency and fostering shared responsibility. The broader societal impact includes reduced tensions within families and enhanced social cohesion through economic interdependence.

The impact of the training was reflected in testimonials from participants. Hussaina Alhassan, a housewife, shared how the training revolutionized her thinking about financial independence. Inspired, she opened a savings account to secure her children’s education. Lucy Anthony, another participant, spoke of learning to budget effectively and committing to ensuring tangible improvements in her financial management. Small business owner Fumilayo Pirfa described the insights on investment and risk management as important for stabilizing and growing her business.

Building on the training’s success, GPF Nigeria plans to form cooperative societies and provide seed funding for small-scale business ventures. This initiative aims to ensure the sustainability of the lessons learned, fostering a ripple effect of empowerment and economic growth within the community.

As GPF Nigeria and BCHV demonstrated, empowering women with financial literacy is more than an economic intervention—it’s a step toward building resilient families and peaceful societies. By equipping women to manage resources and contribute economically, the program paves the way for a future where harmony and prosperity thrive in Hayin Banki, Kaduna State.
