About this event
The division of the Korean Peninsula is a critical unresolved legacy of World War II. More than 70 years after the Korean War, the peninsula remains divided between a vibrant democracy and free market system in the South and an impoverished, totalitarian, nuclear-capable regime in the North.
This timely forum will assess how US policy can move from a narrow focus on denuclearization, during which the North Korean nuclear threat has grown, toward a comprehensive strategic approach with a Free and Unified Korea as its end goal. A new policy proposal will be shared along with presentations from leading human rights and grassroots information campaign leaders from Seoul and the United States.
Korea’s division remains a destabilizing geopolitical fault line that perpetuates nuclear proliferation and systemic human rights abuses. Re-establishing unification as the strategic end state of the U.S.-ROK-Japan policy alliance will provide a focus point for international campaign support from governments and civil society groups. A unified Korea- democratic, nuclear-free, economically integrated and grounded in a shared historical identity- would fulfill the aspirations of the Korean people and advance long-term U.S. strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
