Capacity Building on Conflict Analysis – Empowering Hayin Banki Community, Nigeria for Sustainable Peace

On November 12, 2024, Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, in collaboration with Bethel Candle of Hope for the Vulnerable, organized a one-day training on conflict analysis at Bajju Hall in Hayin Banki in Kaduna, Nigeria. The event was a significant stride toward community peacebuilding, gathering 160 participants from diverse community groups, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, women leaders, and youth leaders, all members of the Hayin Banki Peace and Reconciliation Committee.

The program aimed to equip participants with the tools and skills necessary to analyze, prevent, and resolve conflicts within their communities. It featured interactive sessions on conflict types, root causes, stakeholder mapping, and mitigation strategies. Facilitators, such as Abdul Ahmed, Madam Elizabeth Hassan, and Ahmadu Shetima, guided attendees through practical tools like the Conflict Tree, ABC Triangle, and Force Field Analysis. The training emphasized identifying early warning signs of conflict and fostering collaboration among community stakeholders. Engaging group activities encouraged participants to apply the tools to real-life scenarios, promoting practical learning and teamwork.

The training enhanced participants’ analytical skills by deepening their understanding of conflict dynamics and equipping them with innovative tools for resolution. It fostered community cohesion through mutual respect and inclusivity among leaders from various faiths and social groups. Attendees developed actionable, community-specific strategies to address conflicts and empowered women, youth, and leaders with disabilities to share their perspectives, enriching the discussions with diverse insights.

Lucy James, a women’s group leader, noted, “The tools we learned, like the Conflict Tree and Force Field Analysis, have given me a new perspective. I am committed to using these skills to bring lasting peace to Hayin Banki.”

Youth leader Usman G. Mahmud shared, “This training opened my eyes to the various conflict dynamics. I’m more confident in engaging with others to prevent conflicts.”

The Hayin Banki Peace and Reconciliation Committee committed to implementing the strategies learned during the training. Regular follow-up meetings will ensure progress on action plans, and a framework for early conflict detection and intervention will be established. Additionally, continuous education on peacebuilding will reinforce the momentum gained through this initiative.
