Over 100 women and youth gathered on November 14, 2024, at the Fantsuwan Community Hall in Jema’a Local Government Area, Nigeria, for a Financial Literacy Training program organized by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria in collaboration with Global Peace Women (GPW) Nigeria. The initiative aimed to equip participants with practical financial skills to improve their livelihoods, support their families, and contribute to their community’s development.

The training covered essential topics such as credit management, budgeting, business planning, and marketing strategies. It was more than just a series of lessons—it was an opportunity for participants to take control of their financial futures and build resilience in their families and communities. Facilitated by Abdul Ahmed, the Senior Programs Manager at GPF Nigeria, the training emphasized actionable knowledge, from creating a budget to understanding market dynamics.

One of the program’s hallmarks was its ability to bring together individuals from different faiths to work toward a shared goal. This interfaith approach encouraged dialogue and understanding among participants, nurturing a sense of unity and mutual respect. By the end of the training, attendees had not only gained financial skills but also forged connections that would strengthen community bonds.

The training placed a strong emphasis on the role of financial literacy in fortifying families. Participants learned how to manage resources effectively, start small businesses, and plan for long-term financial stability. These skills, the organizers stressed, are essential for creating secure and harmonious households.

“Families are the foundation of our society,” said Abdul Ahmed. “By equipping women and youth with financial skills, we are empowering them to support their families and contribute to their communities’ growth.”

The program also encouraged participants to view their newfound knowledge as a tool for uplifting others. Discussions on ethical business practices and community support featured the importance of working together for collective progress. Attendees left with a renewed sense of responsibility to apply their skills not only for personal gain but also for the benefit of their community.

For many, the training was life changing. Comfort Ango, one of the participants, shared how the program had boosted her confidence. “This training has equipped me with essential skills in budgeting, credit management, and business strategies. I now feel more empowered to manage my finances effectively and grow my business with confidence,” she said.

Another attendee, Talatu Musa, echoed these sentiments, noting, “The knowledge I’ve gained is already making a positive impact in my life. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned to improve my business and secure a better future for my family.”

Youth participant Nicholas Billy expressed gratitude for the practical lessons on managing loans and starting a business. “I now have a clear understanding of how to make better financial decisions and grow my business sustainably,” he said.
