At a recent panel at the Elliott School of International Affairs, North Korean escapees and reunification advocates examined the realities inside North Korea and the conditions needed for meaningful change. Hosted by the GWU International Affairs Society, the discussion focused on human rights, prospects for reunification, and the role of international and citizen-led efforts in shaping the future of the Korean Peninsula.

Featured speakers included Kenneth Bae, founder and president of New Korea Foundation International and New Korea Hope Broadcasting, Inteck Seo, co-chair of Action for Korea United, and Hyun-Seung Lee, lead program strategist for the North Korean initiative of Global Peace Foundation (GPF) and program director of North Korean Young Leaders Assembly. Each shared personal experiences and professional insights on human rights conditions, the limits of current approaches, and pathways toward peaceful reunification.
The speakers emphasized that improving human rights will require a fundamental shift in the current system, supported by both Korean citizens and the international community. The discussion highlighted the long-standing division of the peninsula, the limited impact of humanitarian efforts, and the need for a phased, people-centered approach to reunification. From exposing human rights violations to preparing for long-term transition, the panel outlined practical steps toward a more open and unified Korea.
