Over 150 youth demonstrated their passion for leadership and sustainable development at the World Trade Center in Kathmandu, Nepal on October 7 when they attended the Global Leadership Workshop and Youth Forum hosted by Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nepal in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Peace and Development Service Alliance (APPDSA). The forum was conducted under the theme, “Moral and Innovative Leadership: New Models for Peace and Development, Leadership Development, Leadership Network and Leadership Impact.”
Bringing continuity to a forum held in April of this year, the objective of this interactive program is to develop the moral and innovative leadership capacities young leaders need to tap into quintessential frameworks for global leadership. Hands on activities help unleash participants’ individual strengths, sense of purpose and empathy. This approach to youth development not only builds social skills and confidence, but supports young leaders in exploring new creative methods to address the SDGs.
The forum presented three extensive sessions including a Global Leadership Workshop, Sustainable Development Panelist Discussion and an Idea Pitching Session. The sessions were designed to equip students to transition their learning associated with enhancing individual leadership capacity to a group/team innovation capacity and further extend it into open innovation environments.
Forum attendees had the opportunity to participate in breakout groups where they selected a specific SDG and prepared a project that addressed a challenge under that theme with a solution, including objectives and a budget to implement the project. Each team had almost 20 members who needed to agree and finalize everything, from objectives and budgeting to the overall impact of their project. Interested participants would get a chance to develop their idea into a proposal through GPF mentorship with a chance to be granted $500 as seed money for their project at the end of December.
Other GPF partners represented at the forum included the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Youth Council and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology.
