Global Peace Women (GPW), the women’s division of Global Peace Foundation, has been transforming communities around the world by empowering women as leaders both in the home and in their greater communities and societies. Already in its seventh year, GPW Uruguay celebrated the milestone in conjunction with the fourth annual Living for the Sake of Others Award ceremony in December 2019 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Living for the Sake of Others Award reception takes place each year to highlight women for their leadership and dedication to causes that benefit the people in most need in society.
In every community, women play a central role in building and maintaining harmony not only within the family but also in strengthening social cohesion within communities. With the vision that “peace begins in the home,” the Global Peace Foundation seeks to engage women and other stakeholders to create a supportive cultural environment to strengthen and empower women’s leadership as a fundamental resource in advancing peace and human development.
More than forty women from the cultural, academic, and political fields attended the award ceremony to be recognized for their outstanding peacebuilding work in the presence of former First Lady and Mother of the President-elect (Luis Lacalle Pou), Mrs. María Julia Pou de Lacalle. Also attending the event was the elected Deputy Ms. Silvana Pérez, Former President of the Uruguay Red Cross, Dr. Nivea García de Meheroff, and the director of the Club Español of Uruguay, Ms. Yolanda Sena, as well as former City Council members and representatives from the Department of Canelones.
