A strong family is the foundation of a thriving community. When families are stable, resilient, and economically empowered, they contribute to lasting peace and development. In Mkovur Zema, a community in Benue State, Nigeria, this truth is unfolding in remarkable ways. Through a Global Peace Women (GPW) Nigeria project, Strengthening Women and Families through Improved Sustainable Livelihood to Promote Nutritional Wellbeing, women—particularly widows—are not only rebuilding their lives but are also strengthening the very fabric of their community.

This initiative, spearheaded by GPW Nigeria project leader Ngunan Tar, is grounded on the belief that families are the cornerstone of peace, and when women are equipped with leadership skills, economic opportunities, and a support system, they uplift their households and, by extension, society. Guided by the GPW vision of “One Family under God,” and with the support of the GPW Global Women Dream grant, the July–December 2024 project provided 20 widows with the tools to become self-reliant, to foster teamwork within their families, and to contribute to a healthier and more prosperous community.

Widowhood often brings uncertainty, but the women of Mkovur Zema refused to be defined by their circumstances. Through training in peacebuilding, leadership, savings schemes, and skill acquisition, they found new ways to provide for their families while strengthening the bonds that hold them together. One of the most impactful aspects of the program was bean farming, which not only provided a sustainable source of nutrition but also generated income. With access to seeds and farming resources, widows were able to cultivate beans, ensuring a steady protein source for their families and financial stability for their households.

The transformation was evident. Women who once struggled to afford basic needs could now provide essentials like soap, food, and school fees for their children without stress. One widow shared how learning to make liquid soap changed her daily life: “Since I started making this liquid soap, I have not bought soap in the market again. My family bathes and washes with it. Thank you, GPW.” Another woman reflected on the economic impact: “The soap making idea and skills have helped me to start a business and through this, I am now able to afford other basic needs and food items for use at home.”

Beyond financial empowerment, the project instilled values of perseverance, teamwork, and leadership. The women took ownership of their futures, forming savings groups, mentoring others, and developing long-term plans for their farming and businesses. The presence of faith-based organizations, community leaders, and development partners reinforced the values of service and resilience, ensuring that this transformation would not be temporary but a lasting change rooted in shared responsibility.

Like any journey, there were challenges. Climate change and inflation posed significant obstacles, impacting bean production and the project budget. Yet, the women’s resilience and problem-solving skills helped them adapt, with some replanting their crops despite difficult weather

conditions. Additionally, the low literacy levels of some participants meant extra effort was needed in training and data collection. But rather than allowing these challenges to limit their progress, the women embraced learning, demonstrating a remarkable ability to turn adversity into opportunity.

The impact of this project goes beyond individual households—it is shaping a community where women lead with strength, dignity, and purpose. Widows who once faced economic hardship and social limitations are now mentors, business owners, and advocates for peace within their families. Their journey reflects the GPW belief that empowering women in the home creates ripple effects that uplift entire societies. When families are strong, communities flourish—and when women rise, the whole world rises with them.
