The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria is a strong proponent of peace and national unity, reflecting a deep commitment to its vision of One Family under God. As such, the organization recognizes our shared humanity and the value, dignity, and God-given rights of every human, regardless of our differences.

Oftentimes, it is through tragedy that our eyes are opened to prejudices inflicted upon people for their ethnoreligious or cultural backgrounds. This was the case in a widely publicized incident that occurred on March 28, 2025, in Uromi, Edo State, when local vigilantes killed 16 innocent travelers. The victims, mostly Hausa hunters journeying to Kano for Sallah celebrations, were falsely accused of being criminals and brutally murdered.

Respected Nigerian leaders condemned the brutal murders and called for restraint among the country’s populace. Recognizing the need for quick action to stem the potential escalation of the crisis amid rising protests and demands for swift justice, GPF Nigeria Country Director Rev. John Joseph Hayab enacted a social media plan on March 29 that reached over 50 million Nigerians.

Rev. Hayab challenged all citizens to reject violence and unite in harmony to preserve peace and stability. He called for the government to “take decisive action to address the insecurity that has fueled fear, suspicion, and mistrust among Nigerians.” Rev. Hyab further commented, “We cannot continue living in a nation where people are wrongly accused and brutally killed due to rising insecurity. We urge all Nigerians to reject violence and embrace the spirit of humanity through our shared vision of One Family under God, where mutual respect, justice, and peaceful coexistence bind us together as one people.”

In a symbol of interfaith unity, Christian and Muslim leaders collectively condemned the killings. Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah stated, “This tragic incident is a reminder of the dangers of lawlessness and mob justice. As a nation, we must uphold the rule of law and protect every citizen, regardless of tribe or religion.”

GPF Nigeria’s social media campaign reached millions of Nigerians, promoting peaceful coexistence, creating interfaith unity, and increasing trust in the justice system. The organization will continue advocating interreligious cooperation and dialogue among diverse people to sustain awareness and prevent mob violence.

It is only through a combined and sincere effort that atrocities such as the lynching of innocent victims can be prevented and long-term security be achieved. Reinforcing this sentiment, a victim’s family member stated, “Losing my loved one in such a brutal manner is painful, but the support from people of all backgrounds has given me strength. I pray that justice is served and that no family ever has to go through this again.”
