According to ChicoER News, Chico State University fraternity–Alpha Sigma Phi–became the first Greek organization on the West Coast to join anti-human trafficking efforts through becoming a Safe Haven on December 5, 2015. As a Safe Haven, all members of the fraternity receive trainings on the human trafficking issue in the United States and how to recognize potential victims in order to assist them and educate the broader community.
“We decided we wanted to do something major about changing the status quo of what it means to be a fraternity,” Sam Franzoia, Alpha Sigma Phi former president said. “We want to show people it’s about more than just partying; its about making a difference on a greater level.”
According to Franzoia, the fraternity plans to continue anti-human trafficking efforts with awareness campaigns and by collaborating with local organizations.
The Safe Haven Campaign, also known as the Interfaith Alliance to Abolish Human Trafficking, is a program of the Global Peace Foundation.
