Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Tanzania partnered with local environmental stakeholders in the Mkuranga district to plant over a thousand new trees in the Vikindu forest. GPF Tanzania has collaborated with partners and organizations since 2015 to arrange ongoing cleanups at beaches, rivers, schools, hospitals, and markets. The projects include time to provide education on recycling waste materials, reducing the use of plastics, and general waste management.
Vikindu Forest is one of several areas that has been affected by the cutting down of trees, unplanned settlements, and burning.
More than 1,500 trees were planted in December 2021 alone when volunteers assembled from GPF Tanzania, Women in Recycling foundation, the United Nation Association Climate and Oceans, Sustainable World Initiative, Dream Chasers, and local villages. Mkuranga District Commissioner Ms. Hadija Nasri also joined the event to support the sustainable goals initiative. After the tree planting activity in Vikindu Forest, all participants had the opportunity to visit one of the local eco-tourism parks called Pugu Kazi Mzumbwi.
