Celebrating Children’s Day in Brazil with the children from the GPF Shallon sports school.
Sport is more than a game. It is a universal language with the power to cross cultural, racial, religious, and socio-economic divides, build mutual respect, shape character, and awaken hope and purpose in young people. Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has long recognized the potential of sport as a strategic tool for peacebuilding. During a Sports Summit at the 2014 Global Peace Convention in Asuncion, Paraguay, GPF emphasized that sport speaks to youth in a language they understand and can create hope where once there was only despair.
In the context of peacebuilding, sport plays multiple roles. It bridges divides by reducing suspicion and building camaraderie between groups that may otherwise see each other as outsiders. It fosters character and values development, teaching discipline, respect for rules, teamwork, fairness, and resilience. It engages youth who are vulnerable to violence, offering them positive alternatives to conflict, recruitment, or crime. Sport also creates safe spaces in neighborhoods, schools, and sports facilities where young people can belong, engage, and develop.
Moreover, sports events can act as catalysts for dialogue, mentorship, and inter-community and interfaith interaction, as GPF Nigeria’s work in using sports to foster peace in rivaling Nigerian communities demonstrates. In Nigeria, GPF brought youth from rival communities together for a friendly football match titled “Fostering Peaceful Coexistence through Sports.” The event, hosted on neutral ground with both athletes and community leaders present, enabled players and spectators to cross community boundaries. One participant reflected that the match meant so much because all differences were put aside, and they played as one. Community elders described the event as a miracle in bringing people together despite long-standing rivalry. GPF emphasized that no government can bring development on its own because peace is what attracts growth and opportunity.

Sport, when thoughtfully programmed, is far more than recreation; it is a strategic mechanism for building peace. GPF has applied these principles in many countries worldwide. In Uganda, sports programs were used to engage students and communities in preventing gender-based violence while promoting inclusive participation and changing attitudes. Across these cases, recurring themes emerge: sport as a rights-based, inclusive practice, as a unifier, as a tool for youth empowerment, and as a springboard for leadership and values development.
These lessons inform the work of GPF Brazil, which has brought sport to the forefront of youth empowerment and community peacebuilding. A key initiative is the socio-sportive project at the Centro de Iniciação Esportiva Shallon in Aparecida de Goiânia. This project promotes healthy activities, develops ethical and moral values, restores self-esteem, and fosters inclusion for children and adolescents through sport.

Children’s Day in Brazil provided an opportunity to celebrate the children of the Shallon Sports School in a way that combined joy, play, and peacebuilding. On this special day, the school grounds became a space where children from diverse backgrounds could connect, cooperate, and enjoy a sense of belonging. Coaches, mentors, and community leaders guided activities that emphasized teamwork, respect, and fair play. The celebration reinforced to children that they are valued members of their community while giving them practical experience in collaboration and conflict resolution.
The impact of such an event extends far beyond the day itself. Children gain confidence, social skills, and an understanding of their own potential as agents of positive change. Families and community members witness the role of sport in fostering harmony, and the relationships built during these activities lay a foundation for long-term peace and cohesion. Through initiatives like Children’s Day at the Shallon Sports School, GPF Brazil demonstrates that when celebration, sport, and values education come together, the result is a generation of young people empowered to lead, collaborate, and contribute to a more peaceful world.
