Ms. Sora Lee is a North Korean escapee and human rights advocate. Born to a North Korean father and a mother repatriated from Japan, she grew up facing systemic discrimination under North Korea’s regime. After a harrowing escape—during which her husband was arrested, and her son nearly died of malnutrition—Lee resettled in Japan, and is now the head of Korea of All (KOA/Modu Moija), an NGO founded in 2014. In 2023, KOA won a landmark civil suit against Kim Jong-un in the Tokyo High Court. Lee also directs the International Institute for the Study of the Repatriation Project, raising awareness about the coerced return of Zainichi Koreans, which the South Korean government recognized as a human rights violation in 2024. She advocates for non-judicial justice, including erecting a human rights memorial in Niigata to honor the victims. Lee also promotes North Korean culture through food and community events.
