Hon. Agnes Pareyio Matane is a trailblazing politician from the Kenya Maasai community and the first woman elected as a Member of Parliament for Narok North Constituency in August 2022. Her election marked a historic milestone for girls and women in pastoral communities, inspiring them to pursue education and leadership. Her parliamentary agenda emphasizes improving access to quality education and infrastructure, especially for children and girls. A long-time advocate for women’s rights, she served as the district coordinator for Maendeleo Ya Wanawake from 1984 to 2001 and was a nominated councillor in the Narok County Council, where she served as vice-chairperson from 2002 to 2012. Currently, she is a member of the Kenya Parliamentary Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity, focusing on promoting inclusion and equality for marginalized groups. Hon. Pareyio also represents the Maa community in national and international platforms, championing their interests and cultural rights.
