Global Peace Foundation (GPF) advances freedom of conscience, religion, and belief as the foundation for all human rights and an essential part of lasting peace. GPF has co-chaired the International Religious Freedom Roundtable in Washington, D.C., supported bipartisan policy efforts, and convened grassroots and global forums to challenge restrictions and persecution. Its initiatives bring together diverse faith leaders, policymakers, and civil society to promote mutual respect, protect vulnerable communities, and strengthen the legal and cultural frameworks that guarantee this fundamental right.

That mission was reflected in Africa’s first International Religious Freedom Summit, convened in Nairobi, Kenya, with GPF as a co-organizer. The summit gathered religious leaders, judicial officers, and civil society representatives from across the continent to address growing threats to freedom of belief. Participants highlighted the role of justice systems in safeguarding rights, the urgent need for stronger legal protections, and how African values such as Ubuntu can inform global approaches to religious freedom. Testimonies from individuals who have faced persecution emphasized both the human cost of violations and the importance of building resilient protections.

The Nairobi summit marked a significant step in uniting African and international stakeholders around a shared commitment to defend conscience and belief. It signaled a growing consensus that religious freedom is not only a personal right but also a driver of stability, social cohesion, and development.
