On May 7, 2025, Brookshine Schools in Joska, Kenya, stood out as a model of environmental responsibility by hosting a major tree-planting event led by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Kenya. Partnering with Chandaria Foundation, KCB Foundation, and the host school, the initiative resulted in the planting of 2,000 trees, an important step toward supporting Kenya’s bold target of planting 15 billion trees by the year 2032.

The event brought together students, educators, and community partners, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating climate change. Daniel Juma Omondi, Africa Regional Representative of GPF, highlighted the urgency of environmental conservation, stating, “Trees are the lungs of our planet,” and highlighted the importance of united efforts in achieving sustainability goals.

Brookshine Schools Principal, Mr. Patley, noted that while planting a tree takes only seconds, its impact can last a lifetime, a sentiment echoed by Director Beatrice Kimani, who described tree planting as a way to build a lasting legacy that balances the needs of people, profit, and the planet. Partner organizations reinforced this message, with Mr. Teddy Oracha of KCB Foundation stating that they were not just planting trees but planting hope for a sustainable future, while Vincent Rapando of Chandaria Foundation urged students to think big, highlighting that if each of the 700 students planted just two trees, they would contribute to a million-tree legacy. The initiative also served as a platform for inspiring youth leadership in environmental conservation, with President’s Fellow Grace Maganga reminding students that leadership begins with service and action, emphasizing the role of service-learning in raising environmentally responsible children.

This event is part of GPF Kenya’s broader commitment to environmental conservation. Through its Environment Program, GPF Kenya works with schools to nurture environmental consciousness and leadership from a young age. Past initiatives include the 1 Million Tree Planting campaign launched in 2021, which engages students and community leaders in promoting stewardship for societal well-being. Additionally, GPF Kenya has been involved in reforestation efforts, collaborating with the Global Peace and Development Service Alliance (GPDSA) to propagate the growth of indigenous and fruit trees. These initiatives align with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

Global Peace Foundation is steadfast in its commitment to fostering environmental sustainability through community-driven initiatives and youth engagement. By integrating environmental restoration into its core programs, GPF empowers individuals and communities to take active roles in preserving our planet. From large-scale tree-planting campaigns in Kenya to environmental education projects in Cambodia, GPF’s efforts emphasize the belief that collective action and leadership are pivotal in addressing environmental challenges. Through these endeavors, GPF continues to inspire a global movement towards a more sustainable and peaceful world.
