Northeast Asia is home to one fifth of the world’s people and makes up one quarter of the world’s gross domestic product. At the same time, it is still grappling with historical and territorial disputes, lack of confidence and inclusive multilateral mechanism to address the many challenges the states of the region are facing. These challenges include increase in tension and arms race on and around the Korean peninsula and by extension in Northeast Asia in general, increase in great power rivalry and resulting changes in the security outlook and policies of states in the region, establishment of cold war reminiscent structures in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. That is why the civil society organizations of the region are working to promote inter-Korean dialogue, cooperation, and Korean reunification as an important pillar of regional peace, stability and development, promotion of a region-wide confidence building through exchange of information and establishment of a regional security mechanism to jointly address concrete issues of common concern and interest.

In all these, a clear vision and goal of a free and unified Korea is both an inspiration and a catalyst for stable and sustainable regional development. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement which provides an opportunity to look back as well as take the necessary measures to end the state of war with an ultimate solution for the long-suffering Korean people. This meeting of the Mongolia Forum can serve that goal.

Though a relatively small country in terms of its population, economy and military power, Mongolia maintains friendly relations with all the states of the region and promotes a pro-active foreign policy. It has successively undertaken parallel political and economic reforms and has turned into a fledgling democracy with a market economy. At the international level it has acquired security assurance from the five nuclear-weapon states that they would respect the country’s nuclear-weapon-free status and would not contribute to any act that would violate that status, which has demonstrated that the spirit of mutual accommodation can lead to a win-win outcome for all. In that spirit, the Mongolia Forum is trying to unlock the great political, economic and social potential of the region by promoting trust and dialogue and the goals for a free and unified Korea and help in turning Northeast Asia into a stable and prosperous region for all.

The Mongolia Forum attaches great importance to involving and active participation of representatives of the younger generation and to that end, as before, shall organize a special meeting with their direct involvement.

To that end, the Mongolia Forum-2023 will bring together prominent experts, policymakers, journalists, civil society leaders including young leaders from the region and the broader global community.
