America at a Crossroads: Leading Our Nation to Live Up to Its Founding Ideals

September 19-21, 2014  •  Arlington, Virginia

Forging a Consensus on Essential Principles and Shared Values in Today’s Pluralistic Society

America today is at a crossroads; the decisions we make, the path we choose, at this critical juncture will have far-reaching implications for our nation’s future. Domestically, we are faced with fundamental and persistent social problems – in our homes, schools and communities. Internationally, we are confronted by an increasingly volatile global environment, while also bearing an enormous responsibility to provide leadership.  In these circumstances, how do we chart our way forward?

The American Experiment is grounded in a shared commitment to our founding ideals, asserting that diverse peoples can build a free, ethical and cohesive society based on principles – what our Declaration of Independence calls “self-evident truths.” The challenges we face today lead us to critical questions: In today’s diverse and pluralistic society, can we still forge consensus around essential principles and shared values?

Join us for this important and timely convening of national faith and community leaders.

Conference Concurrent Sessions

  • Faith and Action at the Crossroads: The Role of Faith Leaders  in the Public Square Today

Americans today are diverse and pluralistic people bound together not by common race or religion, but by shared ideals and values. Americans cherish freedom, and our heritage reminds us that liberty requires citizens who are “self-governing,” men and women of good character and high ethical standards.

  • Family Values: Rebuilding Consensus Out of Confusion

Family is the most important human institution, in which the vital process of nurturing children, inculcating values and building good character takes place. Today we are challenged by serious consequences of family breakdown, and dramatically changing attitudes about marriage and family.

  • Civic Engagement for the Common Good: Promoting an American Culture of Service

Serving others is not only an expression of care and concern, but it can also be a transformative experience for those who serve. Service builds character and helps to engender one’s compassion and respect for others.
