Hyunseung Lee speaking at the Capitol Policy Forum
Hyunseung Lee served in North Korea’s special forces and helped facilitate trade with China. As a privileged son of the regime, he lived a life many inside North Korea could never imagine. Then, a friend disappeared into a prison camp, executions swept his circle, and everything he had been taught began to unravel.
Hyunseung Lee’s story is not just about escape but about a quiet and dangerous awakening. Raised within North Korea’s privileged elite, Lee was shielded from many of the hardships faced by ordinary citizens. Yet privilege could not protect him from the harsh realities of the regime: sudden disappearances, unspoken terror, and distorted information.
His doubts only deepened when he entered China and encountered a reality that challenged everything he had been taught. With his friend in a prison camp, Lee and his family risked everything and escaped in pursuit of freedom.
Speaking at the Capitol Policy Forum on “Free and Unified Korea Policy Endgame,” hosted by Global Peace Foundation (GPF), Action for Korea United, Defense Forum Foundation, Alliance for Korea United USA, and One Korea Foundation, Lee’s journey served as a powerful reminder that behind political narratives are real people navigating impossible choices. These are families who risk their lives not for opportunity alone, but for dignity, truth, and the right to live without fear.
