Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria and the Centre for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development met with the Police Commissioner, FCT Command, and leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Worker FCT chapter on August 18, 2022, to discuss the GPF Nigeria campaign “Youth voices against electoral violence.”

Youth make up a large percentage of Nigeria and many other African nations and are also the principal actors in either fueling violence or mitigating it.

The ongoing project focuses on educating young Nigerian citizens on the danger of political violence surrounding elections, including the long-term effects that result in poverty, hunger, and underdevelopment in the country.

Country Director for GPF Nigeria Rev. John Joseph Hayab attended the visitations to the FCT Police Commissioner’s office and Jabi Motor Park in Abuja, saying that he holds the National Union of Road Transport Worker (NURTW) in high esteem and want them to play an integral part in ensuring a peaceful transition following elections.

“In the next few months, there will be an election,” said Rev. Hayab, “During elections, people are used to traveling. We want the motor parks to be a safe place for Nigerians who might be traveling to vote.” He continued, “This particular campaign is specific for Peace. Before they start their political campaigns, let’s start the campaign for peace.”

GPF Nigeria plans to continue meeting with leaders and officials in Abuja, Nigeria and the surrounding region to gain support and build a network to campaign for a peaceful election season.
