Did you know that caring for the environment can be one of the most powerful acts of peacebuilding? When communities come together to protect forests, restore rivers, and nurture the earth, they are not only healing the planet but also strengthening the bonds that hold societies together. Environmental stewardship lies at the heart of sustainable peace, and Global Peace Foundation (GPF) continues to demonstrate this truth through its transformative development and service initiatives worldwide.
Ahead of the national Mazingira Day 2025 celebrations in Kenya, GPF Kenya, in collaboration with the Chandaria Foundation and the Ministry of Environment, spearheaded the establishment of the 18th Chandaria Tree Nursery at Kabuyefwe Primary School in Trans Nzoia County. The initiative aims to advance the Presidential 15 Billion Tree Growing Campaign by 2032 and is designed to raise 100,000 seedlings annually, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to sustainable ecosystem restoration and environmental action.
During a planning meeting with the executive representatives of Kabuyefwe Primary, Kabuyefwe Boys Secondary, and Kabuyefwe Girls Secondary, GPF-Kenya’s Environment Manager, Mr. Japheth Ouda, shared the organization’s guiding philosophy, “One Family Under God,” as a unifying call to action for collective environmental stewardship.
“Our approach emphasizes community-driven responsibility. By involving young people and schools in tree-growing initiatives, we are nurturing a generation that understands sustainability not as a choice, but as a shared moral obligation,” said Mr. Ouda.

The Chandaria Tree Nursery Network, now expanding across counties, continues to serve as a model of youth-led environmental action, integrating education, innovation, and civic participation in support of Kenya’s green growth agenda. Through school partnerships and volunteer programs, students are gaining hands-on experience in tree propagation, soil management, and conservation leadership, laying the foundation for communities that value the environment as a cornerstone of peace and prosperity.
Environment and peace are inseparable. Around the world, Global Peace Foundation has linked environmental protection with peacebuilding, recognizing that conflict over resources, land, and livelihoods often stems from environmental degradation and scarcity. From reforestation projects in Mongolia that empower youth to restore degraded landscapes, to community clean-ups in the Philippines and Tanzania that bring together families of diverse backgrounds, to Cambodia’s GreenEd environmental teaching project that teaches young people the importance of ecological responsibility, GPF’s Development and Service programs inspire citizens to see environmental care as an act of service to humanity.
In India, volunteers have transformed communities and public spaces through clean-up and beautification projects that restore cleanliness to rivers and their surrounding areas, raise awareness about environmental protection, and foster civic pride and social cohesion. In Nepal, the GPF’s “Green Homes: Green Kathmandu” initiatives promote sustainable living through waste management, gardening, and tree planting. Across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, GPF’s Global Peace and Development Service projects cultivate a spirit of shared responsibility, reminding people that peace grows when we care for the world we share.
As the seedlings at Kabuyefwe Primary take root, they stand as a symbol of hope and renewal. Each tree planted shows what can happen when individuals and institutions act together for the common good. The call to protect the environment is a call to safeguard the peace and future of our planet.
Global Peace Foundation invites individuals, schools, faith communities, and organizations to join this growing movement of environmental stewardship. Whether by planting a tree, leading a clean-up, or teaching the next generation about sustainability, everyone can play a part. When we protect nature together, we strengthen the foundation for lasting peace, building not only greener communities but a more united and harmonious world for generations to come.
