Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Paraguay joined citizens at Plantatón, held at the Linear Park of Asunción’s Costanera Norte, where thousands of trees were planted in a single day. More than a tree-planting activity, the event was a strong demonstration of community-led environmental action.
Over the years, Plantatón has grown into an impactful environmental initiative, mobilizing diverse sectors of society around a shared goal: restoring urban ecosystems and strengthening environmental awareness. Its continued growth reflects a broader recognition that environmental sustainability is closely connected to social cohesion and long-term development.
The initiative brought together families, volunteers, and representatives from public and private institutions. In the course of a single day, thousands of trees were planted, contributing to the expansion of urban green spaces in Asunción. Beyond the numbers, the effort highlights the importance of long-term environmental stewardship in a country facing growing challenges related to deforestation, urban air quality, and climate resilience.
The event also welcomed national authorities, including the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, who emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in building a sustainable future.
“A country doesn’t change just through rules, but when its people actively participate in building their reality.” — Rolando de Barros, Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development
His remarks underscored that initiatives like Plantatón go beyond environmental action. They help build a culture of shared responsibility and long-term commitment, an approach that aligns closely with GPF’s mission of promoting values-based peacebuilding.
What distinguishes Plantatón is its participatory approach. Rather than focusing only on awareness, the initiative invites individuals to take direct action. Participants plant trees themselves, contribute to the restoration of public spaces, and experience their role in environmental stewardship firsthand. This hands-on engagement strengthens the connection between communities and their environment and reinforces a shared sense of responsibility.

One volunteer, Francisco Díaz de Vivar, shared:
“As my first experience with the volunteer team, it was very fulfilling because I felt that I was contributing to both society and the environment. It was also a lot of fun!”
For GPF Paraguay, Plantatón represents more than a single-day activity. It reflects the organization’s belief that lasting peace and development begin at the community level. Environmental action creates opportunities to bring people together, strengthen social bonds, and build a culture of service.
Aligned with its mission of promoting service, leadership, and community development, GPF Paraguay is structuring its volunteer program around three strategic pillars:
- direct community support that addresses immediate needs through grassroots action
- environmental sustainability initiatives that contribute to ecological restoration and climate resilience
- collaborative partnerships that expand impact through alliances with government, NGOs, and civil society
Participation in Plantatón reflects the program’s environmental and partnership pillars in action, demonstrating how collaboration can expand impact and strengthen community engagement.
Another participant, Alejandra Pavón, reflected:
“I feel grateful to have been part of this activity with the Global Peace Foundation. It was a wonderful experience that not only allowed me to contribute to the environment but also allowed me to connect with people who are committed to a more sustainable future.”
As Paraguay continues to face environmental challenges, initiatives like Plantatón highlight the importance of community-driven solutions. Through collaboration and active citizen participation, they show that sustainable communities are built through shared effort and collective responsibility.
GPF Paraguay will continue building on this momentum by developing community-based environmental projects with measurable outcomes, strengthening partnerships with institutions and organizations, and expanding volunteer opportunities that empower individuals as agents of change.
The impact of Plantatón extends beyond the trees planted. It contributes to the social cohesion and shared responsibility needed to build more sustainable and peaceful communities.
