Kenyans gather to celebrate Mazingira Day 2025.

The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Kenya joined Kenyans across the country in celebrating National Mazingira Day 2025, held on October 10, at Kabuyefwe Primary School, Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County. Represented by Mr. Vincent Ayako, the resource mobilization and partnerships manager, and Mr. Japheth Ouda, environment program manager, GPF Kenya participated alongside the Chandaria Foundation, led by Mr. Vincent Rapando, in an event graced by Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Hon. Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa.

This year’s celebration spotlighted the theme “Turudi Primo, Tukadonate Fruit Trees,” a rallying call for citizen-led environmental action. The theme encourages every Kenyan to take an active role in greening their environment through fruit tree planting and sustainable waste management. Dr. Barasa led by example by planting fruit trees and demonstrating eco-friendly waste practices, inspiring learning institutions and communities to adopt sustainable habits that promote long-term environmental resilience.

The event brought together an impressive delegation of leaders, including Principal Secretary Dr. Jane Imbunya (Public Service and Human Capital Development), Hon. Maurice Kakai Bisau (MP, Kiminini), Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi (MP, Kwanza), Hon. Dr. Robert Pukose (MP, Endebess), and Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Mr. Gideon Oyagi, among others.

Together with partners such as the Chandaria Foundation, KCB Foundation, KCB Bank, and other civil society organizations, GPF Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Kenya’s environmental resilience agenda and supporting the national goal of achieving 30% forest cover by 2032.

Building on a Legacy of Environmental Stewardship

This year’s celebrations build upon GPF Kenya’s ongoing environmental efforts and the success of last year’s Mazingira Day, celebrated at Starehe Girls Centre, Nairobi, in collaboration with the Chandaria Foundation, KCB Bank, KCB Foundation, Kenya University Mazingira Students Association, and the Kenya Institute of Social Work and Community Development.

The 2024 celebration emphasized environmental conservation in response to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, complementing Kenya’s National Tree Growing Campaign (targeting 15 billion trees by 2032) and the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme, which aims to rehabilitate 10.6 million hectares of degraded land.

During the event, GPF Kenya and partners highlighted the tangible progress of their initiatives. Through the Chandaria Foundation, over 15 school-based tree nurseries, each capable of producing 100,000 seedlings, have been established in 11 counties across Kenya, resulting in the growth of more than 2 million trees to date.

A Global Commitment to Environmental Leadership

Globally, the Global Peace Foundation has integrated environmental restoration as a core element of its Development and Service programs, inspiring communities to take ownership of their local ecosystems. In Mongolia and Kenya, the Global Peace and Development Service Alliance (GPDSA) has led extensive reforestation efforts, planting over one million indigenous and fruit trees in Mongolia alone through youth-led initiatives.

In Tanzania, GPF has mobilized youth and local organizations under the Vijana Na Amani (Youth for Peace) campaign to clean beaches along Mbezi Beach, promoting both environmental protection and social cohesion. Similarly, in Cambodia, the GreenEd and Safe Water Bottle projects are teaching ecological responsibility while reducing plastic waste in schools.

As awareness and concern for the environment continue to grow, GPF Kenya remains committed to mobilizing communities, youth, and institutions to participate in Kenya’s green transformation. Through collaborative action, education, and advocacy, GPF Kenya aims to ensure that every Kenyan, whether in a classroom, at home, or on a corporate board, plays a part in safeguarding the country’s environmental future.
