Five former Latin American presidents gathered at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC to discuss the growing economic inequality and extreme violence destabilizing the Central American region.

The former presidents called for a regional political process to tackle these issues. Talks about bringing back agreements known as Esquipulas I and II, which ended civil conflict in Central America in 1986-87, were proposed.

The former presidents at the meeting are part of the Latin American Presidential Mission, a civic organization of democratically elected former presidents launched in 2012.
