This article, based on a speech by Mr. Thomas Field, Regional Director for Latin America of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), during the 15th Anniversary Gala of the Global Peace Foundation in Paraguay, celebrates the organization’s profound impact in Paraguay and beyond.
What steps ought a nation like Paraguay take to transform itself into a beacon of hope and prosperity? This question lies at the heart of the Global Peace Foundation’s mission in Paraguay, a journey that began in 2008 and continues to shape the country’s future. When Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon first set foot in Paraguay’s Chaco region, he saw its beauty and potential. This nation could become the “Switzerland or Singapore of Latin America.” How has this vision unfolded, and what lessons can the world learn from Paraguay’s transformation?
A Journey Rooted in Unity
It all started with a simple yet profound observation. Dr. Moon was moved by the generosity and nobility of the Chaco’s residents, who shared what little they had. Inspired, he and his team began organizing initiatives to instill the same values of unity, humility, and service nationwide. These early efforts were about creating a shared sense of purpose. Why does unity matter? because it is the foundation of sustainable progress.
In 2008 and 2010, this vision materialized through massive Global Peace Festivals held in Asunción. Over 30,000 people from all walks of life came together to celebrate their shared values. These festivals were more than events; they were catalysts for change, uniting communities in a common mission of peace and collaboration.
How Has Paraguay Changed?
Fifteen years ago, Paraguay’s GDP hovered around $14 billion, and nearly 37% of the population lived in poverty. Today, the numbers tell a different story. The GDP has tripled, reaching over $40 billion, and poverty has fallen below 24%. These improvements are not accidental. They stem from visionary leadership, international partnerships, and grassroots initiatives like those led by GPF.
But what indeed drives such transformation? Economic growth is just one part of the equation. Paraguay’s progress also hinges on education, ethical leadership, and civic engagement. GPF has engaged with tens of thousands of students and trained hundreds of teachers through values-based programs. These efforts equip young people with skills and principles to lead their communities toward peace and prosperity. Could this focus on character education be the missing ingredient for many nations seeking change?
Women and the Environment: Dual Pillars of Change
Paraguay’s story also highlights the role of women as leaders and the environment as a critical resource. GPF’s Women’s Division has empowered over 4,000 women through leadership, health, and social transformation workshops. These initiatives ensure that women are not just participants but leaders in creating lasting change. Imagine the possibilities when this half of the population is fully empowered to lead.
The Chaco Vivo Green Project initiative is a standout on the environmental front. Did you know that the land managed by Chaco Vivo in Paraguay’s Chaco region is comparable in size to the state of Delaware? Chaco Vivo works to preserve this vital ecosystem for future generations through reforestation and sustainable practices. The commitment is immense—a 40-year effort showing how long-term thinking can secure ecological and economic futures.
A Regional Hub for Dialogue
Paraguay is transforming itself and becoming a hub for regional cooperation. The Latin American Presidential Mission and the Latin American Ideas Forum (FLI) bring together leaders from across the continent to discuss solutions for shared challenges. From addressing democratic governance and transforming education, the green revolution to AI, and combatting cross-border criminality to creating free enterprise zones, these platforms demonstrate how dialogue can help transform nations.

What Lies Ahead?
The Global Peace Foundation’s work in Paraguay offers a blueprint for nations seeking positive change. Real change comes from combining grassroots efforts with national and international leadership. The most potent lesson might be this: Transformation starts with a vision, but it succeeds when all of us take ownership of that vision.
So, what’s next for Paraguay? With its growing economy, strengthened communities, and commitment to sustainability, this country is well on its way to fulfilling Dr. Moon’s dream. The question is no longer whether Paraguay will become a regional leader but how soon.
Paraguay’s story is not just its own. It exemplifies what any developing nation can achieve with unity, vision, and the courage to act. Could your country be next?
