Washington, DC – Ahead of the 80th Anniversary of Korean independence from Japanese rule, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has kicked off a signature campaign in Southeast Asia in support of the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.
The 10 Million Signature Campaign was developed to garner advocates from across the globe, engaging various networks and regions, to build momentum and support for the initiative.
GPF Chapters in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines have been tasked with gathering signatures for supporters of the Korean Dream, a peaceful Korean-led, free, and unified Korea.
“There are 25 million people who are suffering (in North Korea), and we all have a responsibility to stop that suffering,” said Colonel David Maxwell (ret.), Senior Fellow, Global Peace Foundation, during the International Forum on One Korea Forum, Seoul Korea. “Unification is a cause that we should all rally around,” he added.
Some 500 experts in policy, North Korean escapees, civil society leaders, and other visionaries joined the International Forum on One Korea: Vision and Pathway Towards a Free and Unified Korea. The forum highlighted a vision for reunification of the peninsula that will secure human rights for the North Korean people and promote security and economic prosperity in the region.
Seoul also was the site of the “2024 Korean Dream Grand March for a Unified Korea,” a massive celebration of Korea’s National Foundation Day near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The festival which mobilized 30,000 activists and leaders, both in Korea and the global Korean diaspora, called for engagement and support of the signature campaign by 10 million activists by 2025.
“A dream needs a movement of committed, united people to become a reality,” said GPF Chairman Hyun Jin Preston Moon during the forum. “Millions will mobilize at public gatherings in towns and cities across the South and throughout the diaspora, calling for a free and unified Korea, rooted in the Korean Dream that will finally achieve the hopes and dreams of our ancestors and the movement for independence: the Sam Il movement.”
