The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Cambodia has taken a proactive role in shaping the future of youth leadership and peacebuilding through its Youth Development Program. Held in Phnom Penh City throughout January 2025, this initiative brought together youth leaders, educators, and volunteers to foster social cohesion, develop leadership skills, and instill values-based learning. They engaged in a series of impactful activities aimed at strengthening community engagement, leadership development, social cohesion, and service among young people. Through various activities and collaborative efforts, the program empowered over 500 participants, equipping them with the skills and values necessary to contribute to peacebuilding and community development.
One Book One Love: A Transformative Experience
One of the flagship initiatives of the program was the One Book One Love Camping Program, held in Prey Veng Province on January 11-12. Co-organized by YouthStar Cambodia and supported by partners such as Western International School and Amret Microfinance Institution, the event brought together 45 youth volunteers to engage with 370 primary school students. The program involved interactive learning sessions, storytelling, arts and crafts, and team-building exercises. Volunteers helped decorate the school library and set up motivational messages to inspire students. The event culminated in a bonfire gathering, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among participants.
Transforming Education: Character and Leadership Training
On January 12, GPF Cambodia conducted the Transforming Education Training at Koh Roka Primary School, led by Pach Pagnavorn. The session emphasized character as the foundation of moral and ethical leadership, encouraging young participants to reflect on their values and commitment to social good. Through discussions and hands-on activities, attendees explored ways to integrate leadership skills into their personal and professional growth.
Engaging Youth in Global Conversations
In addition to hands-on community work, GPF Cambodia in collaboration with GPF Indonesia hosted consultative meetings for the Young Bridging Leaders program. These virtual sessions, held on January 4 and January 18, connected youth leaders from Cambodia and Indonesia where participants shared insights, discussed project progress, and explored ways to enhance their impact. The meetings reinforced the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable change.
Building a Culture of Service
The program integrated three essential elements of peacebuilding: Interfaith Leadership, Strengthening Families, and Building a Culture of Service. Through initiatives like the One Book One Love project and leadership training, participants learned to embrace diversity, develop a strong moral compass, and actively contribute to their communities. The engagement of organizations such as the Ministry of Education, YouthStar Cambodia, and various schools further deepened the commitment to nurturing responsible and ethical leaders.
By the end of the program, tangible positive outcomes among the participants included an increase in internship opportunities, expansion of youth sponsorship support, and heightened engagement with educational institutions and community organizations. The experience not only enhanced their leadership capacities but also expanded their understanding of social issues. Participants expressed a renewed commitment to addressing challenges within their communities.
With its unwavering focus on values-based leadership, GPF Cambodia is paving the way for a future where young people take ownership of their role in shaping a peaceful and inclusive society.
