Empowering Indigenous Youth in Malaysia

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Kempville Kuantan, 49 Orang Asli youth from SMK Muadzam Jaya embarked on a three-day, two-night leadership adventure that promised to empower and inspire.

Under the theme “Shining Like a Star,” this unique retreat, led by ILead Consultant, aimed to boost confidence, foster leadership skills, and create lasting connections among the participants.

The camp was packed with engaging activities, thrilling challenges, and moments of personal growth, transforming the serene setting into a lively hub of excitement and discovery.

Day One! Launching into leadership

The journey began with an enthusiastic morning briefing where the camp’s objectives were introduced with clarity and excitement. The participants, known as the OA Youth (Orang Asli youth) filled with a sense of adventure, learned about the camp’s schedule, safety guidelines, and rules. To ensure everyone was on the same page, each group received a detailed itinerary, and a WhatsApp group was set up to facilitate communication and foster a sense of community. Feedback from the students revealed their eagerness to dive into the activities, marking the start of a memorable experience.

Ice Breaking – It’s all about fun and friendship!

As the students arrived at the resort, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. The ice-breaking session kicked off with a lively game that turned shy introductions into a whirlwind of laughter and new friendships. Forming a large, energetic circle, the students were tasked with creating unique motions and finding partners, turning the initial awkwardness into a spirited game of creativity and connection. The activity set a joyful tone, breaking down barriers and building a sense of team spirit among the participants.

Outdoor thrills – Archery combat!

The afternoon buzzed with excitement as the students geared up for archery combat, a high-energy team challenge that required strategy and coordination. Coach Aizad guided them through the safety rules and game mechanics before they plunged into action. The air was filled with cheers and determination as the students engaged in friendly competition, honing their teamwork and communication skills. The activity not only brought out their competitive spirit but also fostered a strong sense of unity and collaboration.

Evening engagement – Speak like a star!

As evening fell, the focus shifted to the “Speak Like a Star” session, where the students explored the power of education and personal development. Coach Syafiq led discussions on leadership and the importance of effective communication, encouraging the students to choose topics for presentations the next day. This session was a powerful start to their journey of self-expression and confidence-building, setting the stage for meaningful interactions and personal growth.

Day two! Adventure and discovery

The second day began with the students stepping into the spotlight to present their chosen topics. They shared stories of Indigenous heroes and personal experiences, creating an atmosphere of pride and inspiration. The session evolved into an open forum where students discussed their challenges and dreams, fostering a supportive environment among those present who celebrated their voices and encouraged their aspirations.

Night walk and problem-solving

As darkness descended, the students embarked on a night walk that tested their discipline and self-awareness. Blindfolded and guided by their leaders, they navigated the resort in silence, heightening their senses and building trust within their groups.

The night walk was followed by a problem-solving challenge. The students used balloons and tape to construct chairs, showcasing their creativity and teamwork. The activity culminated in presentations, where each group proudly demonstrated their innovative solutions.

The evening’s highlight was the Cultural Night, a vibrant celebration of creativity and cultural heritage. Each group performed traditional dances, comedic skits, and dramatic presentations, infusing the night with energy and excitement. The performances, judged by a panel of esteemed guests, showcased the students’ newfound confidence and pride in their cultural roots. The night was filled with joy and laughter, celebrating the differences and talents of the participants.

Award ceremony

The day concluded with a heartwarming award ceremony, during which Dr. Teh from GPF Malaysia and Ms. Azura from PPD Rompin delivered inspirational speeches that resonated deeply with the students. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of the past two days, highlighting the camp’s transformative impact and recognizing the students’ efforts and accomplishments. The spontaneous moments of joy and appreciation underscored the positive changes observed in the students, making the ceremony a memorable and uplifting experience.

Day three! Reflection and growth

The final day began with a dynamic morning exercise session that combined fun and fitness. The students participated in group activities designed to boost their energy levels and foster teamwork, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.

WOW Personality – Discovering inner strengths

The “Wow Personality” session provided a platform for the students to reflect on their experiences and showcase their personal growth. They shared their learnings and discussed how the camp had influenced their views on leadership and their own potential. The session focused on building confidence in public speaking and effective communication, helping the students articulate their dreams and aspirations with clarity and confidence. The facilitators provided constructive feedback, encouraging the students to recognize their potential and inspire others.

Peace Circle – Stories from the heart

A new beginning – The journey beyond this camp

As the students packed their bags and prepared to leave Camp Moasis, there was a palpable sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the future. The camp provided them with valuable life skills, leadership training, and the confidence to face challenges head-on. The friendships and memories made during the camp would serve as a source of strength and motivation as they returned to their communities, ready to apply their newfound knowledge and skills.
