In support of World Environment Day in Kenya, more than 1,000 trees were planted by 200 volunteers, with a commitment from EABL Foundation to sponsor the planting of 40,000 trees in Kijabe area for the next five years. The investment of 1.6 million shillings ($US 20,000) to the GPF-backed East Africa Peace Service Corps Environmental Track for the tree planting will also include care and maintenance of the trees.

Bamburi Cement also committed to contributing 5,000 seedlings to go to the best performing schools in the region.

World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebration was Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint., a campaign supporting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Zero Hunger Challenge.

The business and private sector consortium is an ongoing partnership geared towards achieving the 10 percent forest cover in Kenya as envisioned in the flagship project Vision 2030. In addition the consortium will support a waste management initiative in the Nairobi community of Kariobangi.
