The President of Peru’s Congress, Hon. Fredy Otarola Peñaranda, presented a letter of recognition to representatives of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) and the Global Peace Youth Corps (GPYC) for youth service and peace building initiatives at a ceremony in the Peruvian Congress on August 5, 2013.

In her welcoming remarks, Congresswoman Claudia F. Coari Mamani  introduced GPF/GPYC activities in Peru, noting also the significant recent visit by Global Peace Foundation Chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon to Paraguay.

Following the presentation, GPYC President Hiroyuki Tosaka and GPYC Peru representative Edgar Bejarano Castro gave an overview of GPF and GPYC’s global projects and defining values, particularly the importance of moral and innovative leadership as the foundation for prosperity of the nation and all sectors of the society. The ceremony was televised throughout the country and covered by many other Peruvian news media.

The GPF-GPYC delegation also met with Congresswoman Claudia Coari Mamani Oon on August 6 to discuss service and development initiatives in her home district. The Congresswoman was especially interested in the GPF-GPYC AllLights Village Project, which provides solar-powered lanterns and street lighting to communities without access to electricity. Many people in her district live without light, she said, and she was inspired by the model in Philippines which not only provides light but advances community and economic development through active participation of village residents.

The GPF-GPYC delegation also met with Peruvian Congressman Jaime Delgado, who attended the Paraguay conference, “Governance, Ethic and development” in July 2013, to discuss the importance of promoting the volunteering among the youth to foster the values of living for the sake of others.
