The Global Peace Foundation Alternative Learning System (GlobALS) was created in 2011 to provide out of school children, youths and adults with an opportunity to continue their education. This initiative has opened pathways to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities. GlobALS has touched 1,300 learners since its inception in 2011. Two recent graduates shared their story of how GlobALS has changed their life.


I am no longer afraid. On my graduation day, I was between tears and joy. I was so nervous when I wore my graduation robe and stood with my beloved mother. I felt so much excitement when I thought of all the opportunities awaiting all of us. ~ LUTCHIE B. ESPEJON, GlobALS graduate, 2013

1. CHONA MADIZ EVANGELISTA, NUEVA ECIJA

I am Chona Evangelista, 46 years old, married and have 6 children. I live in Barangay General Luna, Rizal, Nueva Ecija.  

Although I am advanced in age, I pushed myself to study despite the fact that I have children who are also studying and are in need of my guidance and support.

When my children go to school, I feel deep pain in my heart because I cannot give them the amount of money they need. I feel even more pain when I see the financially abundant classmates of my children. I become distracted and drift into daydreams where I wish for the day that I acquire a permanent job that would sufficiently support the needs of my children and free them from poverty.

I remember hearing about changes in Sitio Nambabakalan – the solar lanterns given to each household, the solar street lights installed within the sitio, the multipurpose hall constructed at the top of the hill overlooking the entire barangay, and the goat dispersal livelihood  project.

I was amazed. I saw Korean people supporting the All-Lights Village program. And I saw this program making the people of Nambabakalan happy.

Then, I learned that the multipurpose hall is also a school for those who have not finished basic education like me. I did not hesitate to enroll in the GlobALS program. 

I stood firm. I endured the hardship, the distance, crossing the river whenever it rains hard. I withstood the pain of leaving my youngest child who was with flu to the care of his father so that I would not miss a learning session.

Even when we have problems at home, I continue to go to our learning center to study. I did all of these in order to realize my dream of finishing secondary school and acquiring a stable occupation.

And the day came! I thank God for giving me opportunity to pass the test. I have passed and continue to pray that I can find a job that would draw my family out of poverty.

I am very grateful to the All-Lights Village program and the GlobALS program. I pray God would give more blessings to them and that they may be of help to many more people like me.

  • Works with out-of-school children, youths and adults continue learning to achieve life goals, improve quality of lives, and become effective contributors to their societies
  • Target areas: low literacy rate, large population of out-of-school youths, indigenous peoples, Muslim communities from poverty-stricken, underserved communities
  • Current Sites: Navotas City (Metro Manila); Nueva Ecija (Central Luzon); Davao Del Norte (Mindanao)
  • Stats: 3880 learners since 2011 (inception); every class has at least 30 students over 10-month period, 60% are women; 80% youths
  • Funding through Department of Education through ALS Unified Contracting Scheme
  • June 2013, GPF received "ALS Champion Award" (Navotas City Division) in the division of Davao Del Norte

2. LUTCHIE B. ESPEJON, DAVAO DEL NORTE

I was very happy in knowing that I passed the A&E test. I thank God for the Department of Education, our instructional managers, and all those behind GlobALS. They paved the way for me to finish my secondary education.

I gained confidence. I am no longer afraid. On my graduation day, I was between tears and joy. I was so nervous when I wore my graduation robe and stood with my beloved mother. I felt so much excitement when I thought of all the opportunities awaiting all of us.

For the time being, I will look for a job. I wish to eventually pursue a college education to learn more and find a better job. However, as a single mother, I need to provide for my child and my family.

I thank all those who supported our ALS education and more power to all instructional managers.
